READ WITH UNDERSTANDING

A familiar prayer, made easier to follow

The Hanuman Chalisa is a devotional composition traditionally attributed to Goswami Tulsidas. Its forty main verses praise Hanuman’s devotion, courage and service. The prayer opens and closes with dohas, which are included on our reading pages.

Choose the script most comfortable for you. The versions in different scripts help readers follow the original sounds; they should not all be treated as word-for-word translations. Our English reading page uses Roman letters.

About this collection →

01

Read comfortably

Clear spacing and selectable text make it easier to follow a few lines at a time. Use your browser’s zoom if you need larger lettering.

02

Keep a reading copy

Original recovered PDFs are available for Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Tamil. Other pages can be saved with your browser’s Print → Save as PDF option.

03

Listen at your pace

Open the Hindi or English page for the recovered recording. Audio starts only when you press play, so you control the pace of your reading.

Before you begin

Which language should I choose?

Choose a script you can read comfortably. You can compare versions using the language links on every reading page.

Are these translations of the meaning?

Many of the reading versions are transliterations: the original words are represented in another script. The English page uses Roman letters and is not a complete English translation.

Can I download every language as an original PDF?

Four recovered PDFs are currently available. Where an original file is unavailable, we say so rather than provide a broken link. Browser printing offers another way to keep a personal reading copy.

How can I report a text error?

Email [email protected] with the language, page address and the exact line. If possible, include a trusted source for the proposed correction.

Preserving a reading resource

The original seven reading options were restored from the 2022–2023 archive. The expanded directory adds newly prepared script readings and machine-assisted meaning summaries; these are clearly distinguished from recovered material. Some original downloads were not preserved. New illustrations support the reading experience and are not presented as recovered historical images.
